Women in the Economy: Are We Closing the Gap?

Gender equity is not only measured in terms of violence, but also in access to economic opportunities. In 2025, the female population in Mexico is 3.7 million, slightly lower than the male one (3.8 million). However, the gap is becoming more visible in the economic participation rate: while the 75% of men are active in the economy, only the 47% of women they are.

Despite these challenges, the number of economically active women has grown, reaching 161 million in 2024. This indicates progress, but it also highlights the need to continue promoting policies of labor inclusion, reduction of the wage gap and access to leadership positions.

The reality in numbers: Gender-based violence

The first look at the data reveals an alarming picture: in January 2025 they were registered 27,600 crimes against women, a slight decrease compared to January 2024 (30,650). However, the numbers remain worrisome, with 54 femicides, 496 violations and more than 19,000 cases of family violence.

Emergency calls reflect increased awareness and help seeking: in 2025, they were registered 2.2 million calls, a significant increase compared to 1.8 million from the previous year.

Participation in STEM and leadership

  • Women in STEM: The participation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is 32%. While this number represents an improvement, there is still a significant gap compared to men.
  • Participation in projects: Forty-six percent of women participate in projects, which indicates their ability to contribute to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participation in leadership programs: Participation in leadership programs is 13%, suggesting the need to promote the development of female leadership.

We invite you to explore our Dashboard. Dive into the facts, discover the stories behind the numbers, and join the conversation. Together, we can build a Mexico where gender equity is a reality, not a dream.
